Terra Terra, 2026
This exhibition presents the results of Bindweefsel, a participatory project in which fifteen women
from Tilburg with different cultural backgrounds worked with textiles.
In collaboration with artist Sandim Mendes, they created a work of art that you can see and enter here. Bindweefsel is a collaboration between the TextielMuseum and ContourdeTwern, focusing on the creativity and textile skills of a special group of women.
The participants worked in the TextielLab, the TextielMuseum's professional workshop.
In the trimmings department, they learned various techniques, such as cord twisting,
braiding and ribbon weaving. To create this work of art, Sandim Mendes asked them the question:
‘What would you like to pass on to the next generation from your own culture and traditions?’
In pairs, the Bindweefsel women made textile collages to answer that question. In the centre
of the installation hang “cassava” roots made using passement techniques. These roots symbolise Mendes' own roots in Cape Verde, where cassava is an important part of the local cuisine.
You can enter the installation, sit down at the table and talk together about your own roots and your message for the next generation.
Terra Terra will travel to three community centres in Tilburg from January to March and can be seen
at the TextielMuseum from 3 October. After that, the work will become part of the TextielMuseum's collection.
The stories of various participants have been recorded by the Stadsmuseum Tilburg at www.geheugenvantilburg.nl.
